  • They take features away

A decent app since development, but they’ve taken away compatibility with the Files app. Now it’s impossible to add an attachment to Proton Mail from that app on iOS while composing (they also took away several features of the Mail app). This was without any notice to its paid subscribers, taking away a basic function used with any email program. Not happy.
  • High Risk, due to lack of reliability!

I use Proton Drive to contain my password manager, and every time it becomes inaccessible I have to use alternate roots and it causes a great deal of indiscretion working off a multiple platforms. I see this as an extreme security risk to my processes, and I’m considering to leave proton entirely because of that in reliability. Proton Drive — Revised App Store Review Rating: 1 star Title: Paid feature removed without notice. Formal escalation now filed. I purchased Proton Drive specifically to serve as the secure cloud layer for KeePassium Pro, my paid password manager. The iOS Files integration was the operational bridge that made these two systems work together across my devices. It was not a convenience — it was a functional requirement. Following Proton’s recent iOS update, that integration was removed from the production release without prior notice to subscribers. My KeePassium database is now inaccessible on my iOS devices. This is an active credential lockout created by a vendor update, not by any change on my part. I received two support responses. The first directed me to a Beta application — an unstable, untested channel — to restore access to a security-critical system. The second suggested I migrate to Proton Pass, reorganizing my entire security architecture around Proton’s ecosystem because their update broke my existing setup. Neither response acknowledged that a paid feature was removed, that subscribers were not notified, and that no compensation was offered for the affected service period. I have now filed a formal complaint with Proton’s legal team and CEO, and I am retaining this review as a public record of how this matter has been handled. I chose Proton because its stated values — privacy as a right, individual control, integrity over commercial convenience — matched the architecture I was building. The handling of this removal has not reflected those values. That gap is what this review documents. I will update this review if the matter is resolved substantively. Review updated: 12 May 2026 Original review posted prior to escalation.
  • No iOS Files Integration

This app does not have files saved in Proton Drive show up in iOS Files system making it useless for anything not directly built into Proton Drive (which doesn’t have many native features).
  • Way Too Slow

Maybe it’s my ignorance of the process, but I don’t get all of the positive reviews for this app. It is way, way too slow. I ended up shutting off the option to back up photos. If I don’t keep Proton Drive screen open and in front, it stopped. And then when I bring it back to the front, it starts all over again. It’s incredibly time-consuming, and when that is the case, it’s useless to me.

I was really happy with Proton Drive. I moved a bunch of my data into it installed it on my iPad on my iPhone and on my Mac, and even on my android tablet. The latest iOS update removes integration with the Files app. This makes the app completely useless to me now when I contacted proton Support, they said the feature will be coming back in a future update, but will not commit to how long it’s gonna take them to add the feature back in again. So this review goes from five stars to one star because of one bonehead decision.
  • Files App

They literally went out of there way to remove access from the files app forcing users to spend tedious amounts of time recreating the folder structure and saving each file individually
  • Good overall

I’m in the process of switching from Google to Proton and I have to say I do like Proton but there are some issues which have caused me to remove some stars. 1) You cannot view pdf files on mobile. BIG issue for me. Very big. Major inconvenience since I have a ton of pdf files in there. I have to go through a mobile web browser to look at them which defeats the purpose of having the app. 2) Can’t use special characters in files names like /. I don’t understand why this is an issue. 3) The photo organization is non-existent. You can’t get the folders to show up alphabetically or create sub folders which is also a big problem for me. I’ve got them in my actual file drive instead of in the photos section because of this.
  • Would be great, but you can’t manually upload or select pictures, only files for some reason..

Would be ideal if you had a lifetime plan for drive, so we don’t lose our memories, and picture album data.. and finally the main reason I am here, are UNABLE to manually select photos from camera roll or anywhere else, and or add them yourself on top of back up, which could take days or time you don’t have to upload them all, which is exactly why I am here.. on top of this, YOU CANNOT, I REPEAT ARE UNABLE to do this outside of the app, unless your phone turns on, DO YOU EXPECT your clients to leave their devices on for days…?
  • iOS Files app

Recent updates seemed to have removed connection to native iOS Files app on 26.4.2
  • Awful. Buggy. Laggy. Featureless.

Horrific. Barely can load files larger than 500mb, lags out and glitches viewing offline files. Zero modern file browsing abilities. Literally can not open a 1gb video file during a business meeting. App freezes when you have more than 10 files saved offline. Literally an embarrassing app for Proton to publish and charge money. Files sometimes don’t sync - i’m a 20 year software professional and could send tons of easily repeatable bugs in the app. Feels like zero testing was done before release. UPDATE: 4/24/2026 Service is actually worse now. Takes around 2 hours on fiber (to upload) takes around 1 full day to upload a file larger than 7gb. I spent 6 days waiting for 27gb to upload and files keep stopping and restarting. I wouldn’t trust this service with anything important like family photos or videos or work files. You aren’t going to be able to upload or access them reliably. If i could rate this 0 stars i would. Its a paid cloud storage service that takes hours or days to download an upload. Again i’m on fiber, i work in tech - there are no limitations with my hardware. Protons response and Admittance of terrible service - they Don’t support over 10gb and only upload 4mb at a time with lots of other limitations. Don’t trust your files with this garbage service! “ Our system currently handles file transfers by dividing them into 4MB blocks. Concurrently, we limit the number of requests to the server to four per client. This means that, under optimal conditions, up to four blocks can be transferred in parallel during any upload or download operation. This approach, however, presents a limitation when it comes to a large number of small files. These files are processed sequentially to ensure successful encryption, decryption, and overall transfer integrity. As a consequence of this, the efficiency of transferring numerous small files, is constrained by this sequential processing, leading to slower overall upload speeds. This occurs despite the small individual file sizes because the system caps the parallel downloads/uploads to 3-4 files at any given time. We generally recommend uploading in smaller batches to improve speed and stability. Additionally, we recommend keeping the number of direct children (files and subfolders) in a single folder below 10,000. This guideline is in place because the client applications need to decrypt various data points for each item, such as filenames, creation and modification dates, and sizes. The decryption process is inherently resource-intensive, so the more items there are in a folder, the longer it will take to list those items due to the decryption requirement for each.”
