Description

A plain text editor with syntax highlighting, line numbers, search and replace, page guide, and much more. It's like TextEdit but more powerful and optimised for iPhone and iPad. Runestone is made by a single person with a love for text editors and a vision of building the most lightweight text editor for iPhone and iPad that still has the core features for editing code. Features: - Syntax highlighting of many languages including HTML, JavaScript, JSON, Markdown, Swift, Python, PHP, YAML, and many more. - Select one of the twelve standard themes including popular themes like Tomorrow, Dracula, Solarized, and One Dark Pro. - Innovative find and replace for searching and modifying text while still viewing your file. - Choose font and font size, including support for custom fonts imported using another third-party app. - Show the line and column the cursor is located on. - Uses the standard document browser for an experience similar to the Files app. - Quickly navigate to a specific line. - Automatically close opening brackets and quotes. - Multiple windows on the iPad. - Format code using Prettier.js. Supported languages include CSS,HTML, JavaScript, JSON, PHP and more. - Choose text encoding between popular encodings like UTF-8, UTF-16, ISO Latin 1, and many more. - Enable or disable autocorrection, autocapitalization, and smart punctuation. - Set default file extension of new files. - Open files in Runestone from the Share Sheet. - Print documents. Premium features: - Choose between eight app icons. - Show line numbers. - Highlight the selected line. - Increase line height and letter spacing. - Disable line wrapping to allow horizontal scrolling. - Show tabs, spaces, and line breaks using a selected symbol. - Enable page guide at a specific column to easily tell when lines are getting too long. - Add vertical and horizontal overscroll. - Remember the selected language per file. - Save file extensions and filenames that should always be treated as plain text files. - Enable soft tabs and choose the width of the tab character. - Specify whether pressing the tab key should insert a tab or indent the line. - Adjust the scaling of Markdown headings and disable highlighting of code blocks in Markdown. Runestone was built on the open-source framework with the same name. Find more information on the Runestone framework at github.com/simonbs/runestone

  • It’s not bad, but not great.

Pros: Allows you to write code. Allows file creation. Allows file import. Autosave Con: (This is the reason I’m going to look for a better app) No way to view pages created! You have to upload your pages on your site to view and edit again, upload again. This gets old real fast!

I use this almost every day as I format different files to adjust Ai instructions and now it's a direct replacement of the Notes App, for me. Apple is stupid for not making you an offer to have this be a direct extension of the Files App, operating within it, or the Notes App. Especially where they are slowing moving into making their devices more Ai compatible... You should approach Apple. I bet they would make you an offer. They don't have a native app to create file types really, and have only recently added Markdown functions to the Notes App. That would be dope if instead it said "Open File/Note in Runestone" I've noticed Runestone cannot open pre-existing files in the Files App, so I'm assuming Apple blocks that. Who knows, maybe you can just patch that 🤷🏻‍♂️ Either way, I love this app. I've built so much with it. Thank you for making it. I hope you can eventually get a recurring revenue option from Apple. This App deserves to be a Native Apple App.

Works great. Nice feature set, while still being straightforward and easy to use. Just wish there was a Mac version.
  • Please add more custom highlighting!

This is the best text editor for iPad. Some needs, if the dev would please be so valiant: 1. Vertical text mode for CJK scripts, please! I know, not likely, but it would be very helpful and lovely. 2. Custom formatting and hinting configurations other than those packaged. Lisps! 3. Changing the font between different windows. This helps with certain languages. Thank you, please keep up the good work.

This is what software development should look like. Independent developers making excellent product because they care about the space they’re working in. No bloat, just right. Adjust as you see fit. Thank you, Simon!
  • Love it & you will too!

Great free little editor for trying to do one-off code things on the iPad. Paid features are neatly tucked behind a paywall and do not detract from the overall experience. Kudos to the dev on this one, thanks!
  • Sometines, it doesn’t save your document!

After experiencing this for the second time, I had to delete this app from my devices, so I don’t make a mistake of using it again. It occasionally silently failes to save the document, even when you explicitly click on the Save menu. Surprise and terror when you open the document later. Avoid!

Open source (core), Dracula color scheme already added, one time payment and functions well! What’s not to love. Awesome app and would recommend it.
