Description

Noir is a Safari extension that automatically adds a dark mode to every website you visit. It makes browsing the web at night so much better. With Noir, you won’t be blinded by bright websites ever again. And the results look great too. Noir generates a custom dark style for each website you visit, based on the colors that are used on a page. You won’t even notice this happening in the background – that’s how fast it is – but you’ll certainly appreciate the end result: a beautiful dark mode tailored for each website, where contrast is preserved and highlights still pop. And with over 20 built-in themes and the ability to create your own, you can customize the results exactly the way you want. Noir works with any website you visit in Safari, automatically. By default, Noir is linked to your device’s Dark Mode, so websites will only go dark when you want them to. But you can easily customize this to your liking, even per website. Only want to use Noir on just a few specific websites? Sure thing! Disable Noir on some websites? No problem! The app feels right at home on your device. It is a Safari extension, which means there’s no need to manually activate it every time you load a new page. The app also tightly integrates with system features such as Shortcuts, Focus Filters, and Widgets to fully integrate Noir in all your workflows. And your settings are automatically synced to all your devices using iCloud. And just as importantly, Noir takes your privacy seriously: it doesn’t collect any of your browsing data. Period. Noir is made by an indie developer. It does not include any subscriptions or ads. Buy Noir once, use it forever. Notes: • Found a website where Noir’s dark mode doesn’t look just right? Let me know by reporting it. The app will be frequently updated to address issues that are reported. Privacy Policy: • The Noir extension requires access to the websites you visit to analyze the existing style of the page and to override it with Noir's dark style. • Noir never collects your browsing data. The only data Noir ‘collects’ are your settings, and those will never leave your device or iCloud account. • You can read Noir’s full Privacy Policy at https://getnoir.app/privacypolicy

  • It Works Well

I’ve used dark reader for years on other browsers but decided to try Noir rather than dark reader on Safari. It’s not perfect, but it works well. I wasn’t expecting to see it in Little Snitch Mini for making web requests, which apparently it does sometimes to help with analyzing the page.

I’ve had this for like 3 years and it’s worked great.
  • A game changer for Canvas

I’ve been needlessly suffering for about a year with Canvas on my Mac Min M4, with its brightness trying to burn my learning into my retinas. Canvas does not offer any dark mode. Well, I finally had enough and found this simple extension that solved the problem. Now I can go vampire mode and the difference is night and day! I couldn’t give this 5 stars fast enough.
  • Update within past couple of months broke something

I’ve been using Noir for several years, and have really enjoyed using it. I still do; however, an update to this extension (macOS) a few months ago broke its ability to detect whether a site uses a built-in dark mode or not: now, every site visited that is not already marked as being “override detected dark mode” shows that a built-in dark mode was detected, even when that site does not, in fact, have one. I have reported this issue through the in-extension mechanism, with no response and no change to the extension’s behavior. The app seems to be still under active development, so I feel compelled to point out this issue in a more public way.
  • Doesn’t work on all sites

My reason to put 1 star is because alternatives like Dark Reader work on all websites, but Noir has failed to darken areas such as Gradients in Leet Code. I will switch it back to 5 stars once this issue is resolved.
  • Just as useful on the Mac

I’ve been using Noir on my iPhone for several years, and love it. It’s just as useful on a Mac. Some people complain that you have to purchase Noir separately for Mac. Mac, however, is a different operating system requiring another approach. You only pay once - it’s totally worth it.
  • Excellent Application

I have tried many applications to darken Safari pages. Noir is the best. It is quite accurate in determining what to darken and the developer is responsive to problem reports. Not only that, but you can set the color to which the page will be darkened. It can be scheduled to enable and disable itself according to the time the user specifies. Give it a try.
  • Excellent tool for darkening web pages

If you’ve ever had the experience of using an iPhone or iPad at night and having your eyes hurt or your child or partner complain about the light, this is an excellent improvement. It can generally reverse black-on-white text to white-on-black, with some customization (e.g. the use of gray, sepia, etc. as you prefer. It can also darken at least some images. It’s easy to disable without leaving Safari if you come across a web page that doesn’t respond well, or to force it on when a web page includes CSS for dark mode which doesn’t actually work. Very highly recommended.
  • If you like Dark Mode, you’ll love this.

Huge help with bright screens. If you’ve ever been frustrated that your Mac’s lowest setting is still too bright, get this. I’m very light sensitive (migraines, etc.) and this has made a huge difference. Like most people, I try to avoid paid apps but this is absolutely worth the money. I love being able to enable dimming on a site-by-site basis.
