    THE GRAPHICS ON THIS APP ARE TERRIBLE. WHEN YOU ZOOM IN THE RESOLUTION JUST FALLS APART AND THE PRINT IS SO SMALL THAT YOU NEED A MAGNIFYING GLASS TO READ IT.

  • What a Backpacking Map App Should Be

    Just as the title says, this is the app that you will actually use as a backpacker. Flashy tracking, metrics, and user submitted images are definitely cool elements of some other apps, but if you actually want to navigate, downloading a full map and being able to zoom in on every little detail is really what you need. This offers that without any of the buggy fluff that you really don’t.

    What do you call it when software keeps getting worse? This app is a perfect example of that. Pay more for less and less and less. It’s a pdf reader, the price is a crime.

    The app has taken away the free access to add custom maps. This is going to kill the small guys using this platform. The small guys making maps that get imported for free isn’t really free. These small map makers are paying money to Avenza’s parent company for the software to do so. They are making their money off of map makers that can no longer push their maps to their customers. Just a huge greedy move on avenza’s part

    You can only import maps from their store and with the Pro version. It appears that the free version no longer supports user imports. As a cartographer who makes their own maps this is a major reason to find something else.

    I use this for hunting and hiking my local GOV grounds. It’s very accurate gps system with no internet needed. Keeps me within boundaries and I can track my movement to review.

    As another review points out, the free custom map import feature no longer works and instead sends you to a generic Avenza store webpage without explanation. Non-store custom map import has been a core feature since inception and its absence essentially breaks the app for many users. But after several months Avenza still hasn't addressed it as a bug demanding an urgent fix. Even though this is not explicitly listed as one of the now-Pro-account-only level features, they are passively punishing free users until you file a ticket and receive the following workaround solution from tech support: Navigate to the app Settings Select General > Debug Settings > Avenza Map Store Settings Change the default server address to mapstore.avenza.com Once changed, the settings can be exited and the changes will be saved. From there, the user can attempt a custom map import once more via any of the import methods (i.e. email, device storage, cloud storage, etc.), and it should function as expected. Update: the developer response is unhelpful. The issue I describe above, along with the provided solution from tech support, relates to a bug preventing import of *any* custom map at all, irrespective of the long-standing 3-map limit with a free account. You need to fix the issue and push out an update. It's now been over 3 months since the last app update that presumably introduced this bug upon the masses of users.
